Robyn “With Every Heartbeat” video + live shows

Robyn is a Swedish singer just coming on to the UK scene, and her latest single, “With Every Heartbeat”, (a collaboration with Kleerup) has been going around my head for days. She reached number 1 in the UK charts this month and I can hear why.

The first time I heard “With Every Heartbeat” was when I watched the video for it. I immediately thought of Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush. There’s something about the video and her singing style that reminded me of them. The good thing, though - is that Robyn does have her own sound.

“On paper” I wouldn’t normally go for music so sweet and poppy, but there’s just something about the arrangement and the mix - the sounds come together brilliantly. Of course, there’s also Robyn’s endearing voice to consider. She has one of the best voices on the scene as of late. It’s so refreshing to hear.

There’s a stripped down “Live Lounge” piano version of Robyn singing “With Every Heartbeat” on her Myspace page, and it is an incredible rendition of the dance mix. The other songs listed sound great, and you can also hear an album sampler.

Calvin Harris parties, How to Party Responsibly video

There’s quite an uproar surrounding Calvin Harris‘ UK contest “Merrymaking at Your Place” where Calvin is attempting to set a new world record for the most house parties happening simultaneously across the country than ever before. The event is set to take place on Saturday, August 18th 2007.

The contest has caused an absolute media frenzy in the UK. National BBC news ran the story and both national broadsheets ‘The Times’ and ‘The Telegraph’ have run substantial articles on the contest - the story even made the front page of ABC news online in the US.

As a result of all of this hoopla, Calvin Harris was asked to issue a guide on how to party responsibly:

Bitter:Sweet - The Mating Game video + tour dates

Bitter:Sweet is set to release their latest album, ‘The Remix Game’ on August 7th, 2007. The Remix Game is a collection of songs from their debut album, ‘The Mating Game’ (2006), remixed by some of the top mixologists, such as Thievery Corporation, AtJazz, Skeewiff, Nicola Conte, and Fort Knox Five.

I’ve been listening to Bitter:Sweet’s tracks - from both ‘The Remix Game’ and ‘The Mating Game’ albums, and can they groove. Shana Halligan’s laid back vocals and harmonies alongside a brilliant mix of electronica and trance produced by Kiran Shahani (The Supreme Beings of Leisure) is refreshing, and it’s interesting to hear the new mix of funky, jazzy, house remixed versions of the songs as well.

Bitter:Sweet’s music is perfect after a long day when you just want to sit down, relax and forget all your troubles.

Nine Inch Nails new Survivalism video

There is so much to be said about Nine Inch Nails that as much as I hate to admit it, it’s all pretty much over my head as to the amount of work they are involved in, let alone Trent Reznor projects as a separate entity.

Looking at their official website, I feel that I may not be alone when it comes to having difficulty in keeping track of Nine Inch Nails and all that they do. NIN.com has a family tree style links map set up on the website in order to keep all of the information organized. There’s a lot there to soak in.

There’s even a resources page that includes links to Nine Inch Nails articles on sites like Wikipedia, All Music Guide, Yahoo Launch and Google. There are links to fan discussion areas, music, videos, The NIN fan club called The Spiral, questions to Trent and the band and much more.

Then there’s all of the different musicians that have worked with Trent in Nine Inch Nails over the years to consider. I’m beginning to think Trent Reznor is like a 21st century Frank Zappa with all that’s going on.

One thing I do know though, is that I respect how busy Trent Reznor is in all that he does in his music endeavors. Especially the fact that he does so much online, music for video game soundtracks, videos and then follows it all up with touring so that he can reach out to the people in the real world for the live experience - which you can’t get from TV or the internet.

Candie Payne I Wish I Could Have Loved You More single

I’m always on the lookout for a female singer to come on the scene and ‘wow’ me and I think it’s just happened with Liverpool based singer Candie Payne. Her latest single, “I Wish I Could Have Loved You More” due to be released on March 12th has an old 60’s pop feel that quickly sets a mood. “I Wish” could have easily been written for a scene in James Bond circa 1960’s Sean Connery.

Sarah Assbring from El Perro Del Mar has also captured that certain pop feel with her music and one name that both she and Candie Payne have in common when it comes to influences is Serge Gainsbourg. There’s been a growing trend of new wave 60’s pop that is creeping it’s way around Myspace right now and soon hopefully more so on the radio. I like this sound. There’s something refreshing, airy and non pretentious about the genre.

Candie Payne is new on the scene, now signed to Deltasonic records (Sony) in Liverpool. Candie’s brother Sean Payne is the drummer in the very popular and quirky UK band The Zutons. Hopefully Candie will reach as many ears with her music as The Zutons have done with hits like, “You Will You Won’t” and “Valerie”.

Ghosts Stay The Night, April tour dates

The more I listen to new band on the scene Ghosts‘ latest single, “Stay the Night”, the more I like it. With the release of “Stay The Night” coming up on March 19th, this breezy indie pop song has a very summery feel. It’s almost too bad it wasn’t released closer to the summer, but then again, there is the chance that “Stay The Night” could very well hang around long enough for the hot days with the windows rolled down - which will give us all enough time to learn the words.

Jet Shine On with new single, video and tour dates

When I first heard “Shine On” by Jet I immediately thought of Oasis during the chorus of the song. Another observation that I’ve made is that sometimes when I see Jet’s lead singer, even though he looks nothing like him, there’s just something about Nic Cester that reminds me of Bono from U2. These observations are nothing but complimentary. After all, Bono and Oasis are huge. I’m a fan of the Australian band Jet and have been for awhile now.

“Shine On” is off of Jet’s new album by the same name, and the single is scheduled for release March 5th in the UK. What’s sad about the track is that Nic Cester wrote the song about the passing of his and his brother and band mate Chris Cester’s father. The good thing though, is that it’s a good song and I’m thinking that it could be a big hit for them. Very catchy and radio friendly.

The Bees Who Cares What The Question Is from Octopus

The Bees. That is a great band name. The thing is though, they also go by A Band Of Bees. And the good thing about it is that The Bees can follow up their great band names with quality music. I was fortunate enough to see them play last summer as The Bees at the Lovebox festival in London and when they began their set, they stopped me in my tracks.

Sometimes The Bees have a rustic old school sound that can be reminiscent of an American southern rock band and they can jam like The Band and the Grateful Dead while singing with brilliant harmonies. Then sometimes they’ll throw in horns and a reggae dub vibe with a modern mix, which is what makes them very unique in this day and age. A mixed bag of tricks is what I say. Quite amazing considering they’re from the Isle of Wight, the small island off the southern coast of England most famous for The Isle of Wight Festival and a somewhat popular destination for English holiday seekers.

The Bees’ first album Sunshine Hit Me was released in 2002 and then Free The Bees in 2004. Now their third album Octopus is set for release in March 2007 and includes their new single, “Who Cares What The Question Is”.
