After being out of the limelight for so long, I was surprised when Yusuf appeared on Later with Jools Holland back in November. He performed “Midday” and “I Think I See The Light” off of his new album An Other Cup. He also played “Peace Train” which was originally released in 1971 when he was then known as Cat Stevens.

Yusuf seems pretty open and comfortable about being associated with and known as the former Cat Stevens, which is refreshing. There are other artists out there who don’t want any mention of their previous name once they’ve changed it. It’s great to see that he respects his fans and listeners in that way. It’s not always easy for them to let go of what they’re familiar with or to understand why an artist would change their name in the first place.

After a spiritual awakening of sorts, Cat Stevens converted to Islam, changed his name to Yusuf Islam and left the music business 28 years ago. It’s good to see him back creating music and singing with his warm and comforting voice for all to hear. Yusuf’s latest release An Other Cup marks his 40th anniversary of his first album, Matthew and Son.
