A new film about Joe Strummer will be premiering at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah with the first screenings beginning this weekend. Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten directed by Julien Temple (The Great Rock and Roll Swindle) is a documentary about the late singer/guitarist who fronted and co-founded English punk band The Clash and later The Mescaleros before his death in December 2002.

From The Sundance Film Festival Website:

Through previously unearthed interviews with Strummer himself and recollections of those who knew him best, Temple reveals a complex man who used his music as a bullhorn for his conscience–as well as a means to educate others about the injustices of the world. The film includes live concert footage spanning Strummer’s career and tapes of his BBC radio program, all of which provide a fitting soundtrack to his distinctive and storied existence.

I’ve seen quite a few documentaries about Joe Strummer and have always enjoyed watching them. From what I’ve been told by people who knew him during his Clash days, he was genuine and one of a kind. Fans who would hang around after the shows got to know Joe and the band because they were friendly and easy to approach.

The Clash meant a lot to many people around the world when they were going strong in the 70s and 80s. The good thing is that there are still so many fans out there, old and new, that feel just as passionate about Joe and The Clash now as they did then. The Clash played music that held no boundaries and began incorporating reggae into their songs. Working with top reggae artists like Lee “Scratch” Perry and Mikey Dread helped to give them even more of an original and unique sound then when they began.

There’s so much more to be said about Joe Strummer that one blog entry alone doesn’t seem to do him justice. The best way to get to know him is of course through his music and also the documentaries about his life that include people who knew him.

Unfortunately I won’t be able to go to the Sundance Festival to watch Julien Temple’s The Future Is Unwritten but will look forward to when it hopefully becomes available on DVD.

For those who are lucky enough to attend the premiere, here are the screening times:

Saturday Jan 20 9:00 PM Holiday Village Cinema IV
Sunday Jan 21 9:00 PM Broadway Centre Cinemas IV, SLC
Monday Jan 22 9:15 AM Holiday Village Cinema III
Tuesday Jan 23 1:00 PM Holiday Village Cinema IV

Information could change! For the latest news and screening times go to the Official Sundance Film Festival Website.

My life was changed and my attitude altered after first hearing the bands listed below. Click on the links to be taken to the YouTube videos that I’ve selected for each band.

1. Crass (Contaminational Power)

2. Sex Pistols (Holidays In the Sun)

3. The Clash (Clash City Rockers)

4. The Stranglers (Nuclear Device)

5. The Damned (Smash It Up/I Just Can’t Be Happy Today)

6. Stiff Little Fingers (Alternative Ulster)

7. Anti-Nowhere League (So What)

8. Public Image Limited (Death Disco)

9. Siouxsie And The Banshees (Love In A Void)

10. U.K. Subs (Stranglehold)

All of the music from these bands have stood the test of time over the last 30 years. They’re still more exciting than a lot of the bands that I listen to on the radio and see on TV today. There was a certain scariness and unpredictability that I don’t feel with most music of the current time.

If you don’t believe me go check out these bands listed above by following the video links.

We’ve been lucky to be able to watch the Electric Proms on the BBC’s interactive tv service and have enjoyed sets by Paul Weller and Jamiroquai. After weeks of build up though, I’m not quite sure how I feel about Gorillaz and Blur frontman Damon Albarn’s new project The Good The Band and The Queen which features Paul Simonon (The Clash) on bass, ex-verve guitarist Simon Tong and drummer Tony Allen from Fela Kuti.

To finally be able to see Paul Simonon playing bass with a new band was exciting to say the least, however, I was hoping to hear more of an edge to the music especially with a name like The Good The Bad and The Queen. I could be more harsh with my opinion on this, but have decided to just leave links here for readers and listeners to make up their own minds. After all, maybe it was the hype that left me with high expectations and am now feeling quite let down.

Oh well. Maybe in time I’ll grow to like it more, will have to wait and see.
The drastic contrast between Camille’s voice and the cool punk vocal style of Paul Simonon on his original version is one worth hearing.

The second time that I heard them was yesterday while I was at the trendy QI in Oxford with Dave and our now famous drummer friend having coffee. When Nouvelle Vague’s version of The Undertones ‘Teenage Kicks’ came on the overhead speakers our drummer friend commented something along the lines of, ‘Oh, that’s that french band that covers a bunch of male fronted songs’. I thought it was pretty cool that I had already known about them and immediately told him about their version of ‘Guns of Brixton’ and now I’m here asking you lovely readers to go on over to their site and hear their covers for yourselves!
